This is heresy to the scholars and regulars who earn their living from Mindef and the Singapore Armed Forces as it would mean that thousands would be out of a job.
Rabidly patriotic Singaporeans who are so polarised and have their minds so closed that they accuse me of being unpatriotic and being, frankly, insane.
But stop for a while. Aren't we already outsourcing other internal security mechanisms. In case you don't know, the Mas Selamat case has revealed that our internal security detainees, which include JI members, are being guarded by the much vaunted Gurkhas. Last time I checked, Gurkhas are NOT SINGAPORE CITIZENS. So haven't we outsourced an important internal security task to FOREIGNERS? Hmmm...
If you have talked to Singapore Police Force regulars, you will find that even your friendly neighbourhood police officer includes Malaysian Permanent Residents (PR) who work in SPF and carrying loaded revolvers and patrol amongst our populace helping to enforce internal security and to maintain public safety. Hmmm, isn't this considered outsourcing? If you trace the roots of many Singapore Armed Forces Regulars, you will realise that in the past, a number of them were Malaysian PRs who were subsequently granted citizenship when they took up regular service in the armed forces. So, if you think about it, Singapore already has a tradition of co-opting NON-CITIZENs into our security apparatus.
Taking the argument of "foreign talent good", we should also welcome foreign talent into our SAF and take the load of conscription away or at least lessen it amongst our male citizens. The French Foreign Legion concept comes to mind. France has no qualms about using them for the more risky military adventures for the Republic.
Going forward, the costs of conscription on the Singaporean male citizen is tilting the playing field distinctly against him as he strives to compete in the brutal economic pie that is Singapore Incorporated. Singapore Incorporated is increasing becoming foreign as more than 2/3s of new jobs now go to non-citizens. Given mass immigration to propel Singapore Inc is our current administration's way of ensuring "More good years" and the "Swiss standard of living", I wonder how the average male Singaporean who serves NS is pacified with tokenisms of $100 extra for GST/NSS/ERS top-ups whilst his own economic survival is put into jeopardy by the undiscerning mass immigration.
Would it be a case of jobs for foreigners and NS for Singaporeans?
You decide based on your own circumstances.
Majullah Singapura.

Hi
The notion of foreigners serving in a country's army is not as ridiculous or as unusual as we think.
In the US armed forces are nationals of many nationalities eg Filipinos/South and Central Americans etc.
Membership has its privileges as American Express adverts would say.
Serving the armed forces is usually a short cut to citizenship and other financial aids ( eg scholarships to Uni's) . That is if they survive their tours in Afghanistan or Iraq!

Hi Dr Huang
The idea is anathema to those whose minds are as open as Burma's Junta when it comes to allowing aid workers into their country in the aftermath of cyclone Nagris.
The fabric of our nationhood is unravelling thread by thread as the meaning of NSmen's contributions to national defence are increasingly lost on those of us who have served, suffered and swallowed our inequalities for the love of the motherland.
Since our motherland treats us not as her children but as contract employees, is it a wonder why her children now have no feelings for her?
Majullah Singapura and make money in Singapore Inc while the sunshines. Because money talks and patrotisim is just a word you can find in the dictionary.
Before 9/11, the security for private homes for ministers like WKS was provided by the police constabulary, mostly of the Malay ethnic group. After 9/11 the Gurkhas were brought in to guard their houses, with 4 hourly guard changes. Needless to say, it costs taxpayers lots of money. Nope, the expenses are not deducted from their million dollar salaries.
Dear Sandy
Reinforces the double standards being practiced by the MIW. On the one hand, Singaporeans need to be drafted for national security. But the own private security arrangements of VVIP MIW are handled by foreign talent.
Typical.
Hmm, can trust Gurkhas to guard MIW top brass but not trust them to help lighten the load of NSmen?
To be fair, Gurkhas do help out at certain protection of installations as I encountered some of them during my ops duties as a reservist. So they can do more and lessen the loads of NSmen, right?
